If you have passion and focus / You can achieve anything
Research Assessment Exercise 2008: ranked 16th nationally for research quality, with 75% of our research rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent".
Kent was ranked 8th in the UK for Economics in the National Student Survey 2008.
The Kent School of Economics offers both taught and research postgraduate degrees, covering all aspects of the subject. We are dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research, demonstrated by results in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 and recent student surveys. All academic staff are active in research, and teaching and learning are informed by the School's thriving research culture and strong cosmopolitan academic community
Our taught courses offer the winning combination of excellent training in core economics; the opportunity to specialise in areas such as finance, econometrics, development, agriculture or the environment; and advanced skills necessary for employment as an economist at a high level.
Economics staff at Kent have an international reputation in their field and the School regularly features in annual surveys of departments of economics in the UK. Our staff members serve as academic advisers and experts to UK and international agencies, including the World Bank, the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UK Treasury, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and the UK Food Standards Agency.
We have 22 academic staff, with about 30-40 MSc students and 25 PhD students. This creates a good community for interaction between students and ensures students receive a good deal of individual attention in classes and workshops.
An international school
Our postgraduate student community is global with about half the students originating from outside the UK and Europe, including Africa, China, India, the Middle East and the USA. There are also ten different nationalities represented within the academic staff. We have strong links with universities in Germany, Bulgaria, France and China. Economics staff teach on the postgraduate courses provided by the University of Kent at Brussels. You will be able to integrate into this multicultural environment and build the foundations for an international professional network.
Dynamic Publishing Culture
Staff in the School of Economics publish widely in a comprehensive range of topics. The School has its own Discussion Papers series, which gives an opportunity for staff, sometimes in conjunction with PhD students, to publish work in progress. Many of these papers are later published as journal articles.
In the past few years, staff have published in journals such as: Econometrica; Economic Journal; Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics; Spatial Economic Analysis; Journal of Public Economic Theory; Journal of Socio-Economics; Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control; Applied Economics; Journal of Agricultural Economics; Journal of Productivity Analysis; Bulletin of Economic Research; International Journal of Industrial Organisation; The American Economic Review; Journal of International Money and Finance; World Development; Review of Economic Dynamics; Journal of Money, Credit and Banking; Games and Economic Behavior; and Oxford Economic Papers.
