  • The online form will take up to 20 minutes to complete and can be saved and returned to at any time. This page is designed to help you get prepared.

  • A decision on your application cannot be made until all the additional paperwork has been received so it is important to send them in as soon as you can

1. Before you begin

Choosing the right course for you

Make sure you have read the information about the course carefully. Information can be found in our online postgraduate study section or our printed Graduate Prospectus

General entry requirements

Make sure you have understood our general entrance requirements

English language requirements

If English is not your native language, make sure your meet our English language requirements

Research degrees

If you wish to do a research degree, we strongly recommend you get in touch with your possible academic school or supervisor to discuss your proposed programme before you apply.This is particularly important if you are applying for a funded place on a research project in the Sciences Faculty.

Psychotherapy

If wishing to study Psychotherapy, you should first contact the Centre for Professional Practice to discuss whether you meet the professional qualifications for direct entry.

All research applicants to the Kent Business School

If you are applying for a research degree to the Kent Business School, you will be required to pay a £100 ‘Research Proposal Submission Fee’ along with your research proposal and supporting documentation (unless you have a distinction at Master's level).

Please note, this only applies to research applications to the Kent Business School and does not apply to any applications to other subject schools at Kent.

2. Completing the form

Please have the following information ready before filling in the application form. You will need 20 minutes to complete the form but can save the form at any stage. If you click the 'save' button (at the bottom of the form next to 'submit'), you will be emailed a web link that will take you back to your application at any time.

The qualification type and subject of the course you wish to study.
eg MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies or PhD in Biochemistry

You can find this in the printed Graduate Prospectus or on one of our online subject pages. You might like to print the relevant page out or have it open in another browser window.

A valid email address

You will be sent an email during the application process and will need to read it in order to complete your application.

Your home address and a correspondence address if necessary

If at any point during the next few months you will be living away from your home address, you will need to supply an alternative address where you can be reached.

If you are applying for a research Master's or PhD, a research proposal

When outlining a research proposal you should consider including the following:

  • A title
  • A succinct description of the research question
  • A brief outline of recent research in the area of investigation
  • The particular contribution to knowledge and understanding in this area that you hope to make
  • The methods that you plan to use to address the research questions
  • The primary sources that you will use (if appropriate)
  • A timetable or outline of how the project may develop.

You should also state which staff member you hope will supervise your project so that they may consider your application. If you are not applying for a specific funded project you should ensure that your proposal is congruent with the expertise and infrastructure of the host school.

You will need to include the names of the awarding institution, dates of attendance, type of qualification awarded, class of honours, course names and the date they were awarded.

Details of any work experience

Details of your academic referees

This must include the names, job titles/positions, email addresses and postal contact address for two academic referees who are familiar with your academic abilities.

Please note: for Tizard Centre MSc in Analysis and Intervention in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities applicants, one of the two referees requested must be academic and one should be able to comment on your experience of services for people with learning disabilities.

3. Sending us your paperwork

After completing your form, your application is still not complete until we have received the following documents.

Please make sure that they reach us as soon as possible as failure to supply any of these documents quickly will delay your application or make it impossible for us to consider you.:

Specific faculty and academic school requirements.

  • Faculty of Humanities
    • all students
      You must submit a sample of recently composed work (about 1,500-2,000 words), preferably marked
    • MA in Creative Writing, please note
      The sample of writing submitted with your application should be about 2,000 words in length, typed in 12-point Times and double-spaced, and should contain the following two elements:
      • A 300-word description of your creative writing plans.
        Tell us whether you intend to work in fiction, poetry or narrative non-fiction, and what experience you have working in this form. Please give some indication of themes, research questions, concerns and/or ideas that you would like to explore in your writing.
      • A piece of writing of up to 1,700 words, or 4 pages of poetry (in this case, don’t double-space).
    • research degree applicants
      In addition to the sample of recently composed work above, you must also submit a brief outline (about 500 words) on your proposed research project and the reasons why you are interested in that particular area.
  • Faculty of Social Sciences and School of Computing - research degrees
    You must also submit a brief outline of 500 words on your proposed research project and the reasons why you are interested in that particular area.
  • School of Psychology
    Some courses in Psychology require additional application material to be sent in. Please check the relevant page for your Psychology course for details.
  • School of Politics and International Relations - research degrees
    Applicants must submit a detailed proposal of 1500 words. Please consult the guidance in the PolIR postgraduate research handbook on preparing the research proposal (p12).
  • School of Politics and International Relations - MA in Peace and Conflict Studies
    Applicants must submit a copy of their curriculum vitae in addition to the required documents. Applicants must also specify in the ‘reasons to study' box (on the application) whether they intend to start the programme in Canterbury or Marburg.

An interim or final transcript certifying your main entry qualification.
eg Bachelor or Master's degree

Please request original copies of these to be sent by your awarding institution directly to us. Photocopies or scans will only be accepted in the short term during your application process.

Evidence of English language ability if required.

References from two academic referees.

All references must be in English. The University needs to receive both references before deciding on your application. We can accept references by email provided your referees use their institutional email account and follow up the email with copies written on official letterheaded paper.

School of Psychology applicants must ask your referees to complete a questionnaire on your statistical and methodological training to date if you have not completed a Psychology degree which is accredited by the British Psychological Society, as well as providing a reference. Research degree applicants to the Kent Business School

As of January 2010, if you are applying for a research degree to the Kent Business School, you will be required to pay a £100 ‘Research Proposal Submission Fee’ along with your research proposal and supporting documentation. Details of how to pay this fee will be e-mailed to you when you apply. If your application is successful your ‘Submission Fee’ (£100) will be deducted from your tuition fees. The ‘Submission Fee’ is non-refundable and will not be returned to you if your application is not successful.

Please note, this only applies to research degree applications to the Kent Business School and does not apply to any applications to other subject schools at Kent.

4. What happens next

We will acknowledge your application and let you track progress online

When you have successfully submitted your application you will receive an acknowledgement email which contains your application number. You can then monitor the progress of your application on-line via our application tracking page

In order to confirm your identity you will be asked to confirm your application number and date of birth.

We will inform you of our decision

A decision on your application will be made as soon a possible, once we have received the required supporting documentation. Your application will not be processed without the supporting documentation so please ensure that references and qualifications/interim transcripts are provided as soon as possible.

The University will communicate its final decision to you in writing, but please ensure that your email account is fully operational as we may need to contact you more urgently by email.
