Undergraduate part-time fees and funding

Kent’s part-time students may be eligible for funding from Student Finance England and/or the University. To qualify for any of the available sources of funding, you need to be a home/EU fee-paying student.

Undergraduate tuition fees

Tuition fees 2012

Example fees for a student studying 50% of a full-time undergraduate course.

Stage 1 (certificate):
Two years: £4,500pa / £9,000 total

Stage 2 (diploma):
Two years: £4,500pa / £9,000 total

Stage 3 (degree):
Two years: £4,500pa / £9,000 total

The University of Kent has set its fees for full-time home/EU undergraduate students at £9,000 for the academic year 2012/13.

Tuition fees at Kent are the same for both part-time and full-time students, with part-time students paying on a pro-rata basis. Therefore, if you are studying 50% of a full-time course, your tuition fees would be £4,500 pa. (See box on the right).

Your university tuition fees are due at the start of each academic year. If you are in receipt of a tuition fee loan, Student Finance England will pay your fees to us directly.

Tuition Fee Loan

Part-time students are now eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. For details on the eligibility criteria you can download the 'quick guide' published by Student Finance England (pdf) or watch the video below.

You can apply from early August by downloading a 'Tuition Fee Loan application form' (PTL1) for new part-time students from www.slc.co.uk/england or by contacting the University to request an application pack.

Once your application has been successfully processed, your tuition fees will be paid directly to the University.

You will not begin to repay your loan until four years after you start your course and you are earning over £21,000. However, if your course is longer than four years, you may start paying back your loan before you graduate depending on your annual income.

Part-time students are not eligible for a Maintenance Loan.

Additional support (DSAs)

If you're a part-time student with a disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, you may be able to get extra help through Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs). Fee waiver

  • If you are studying 25% of a full-time course per year: Fee waiver: £1,000 pa
  • If you are studying 50% of a full-time course per year: Fee waiver: £2,000 pa

At Kent, we believe that all students who can benefit from our courses should have the opportunity to come to the University. We have committed £6 million towards supporting new students and we will continue to support and encourage students who have a desire to learn.

New part-time students starting in the academic year 2012/13 may be eligible for a pro rata fee waiver (£4,000 for full-time) in their first year of study as part of the National Scholarship Programme. The value of the fee waiver available will depend on the student's level of study, ie if a student is studying 50% of a full-time course they would be eligible for a £2,000 fee waiver in their first year.

In order to qualify students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The student must be registered on a part-time undergraduate degree programme at the University of Kent (excluding franchise colleges)
  • The student must be studying the equivalent of 25% or more of a full-time course
  • The student must ordinarily reside in England
  • The student is from a household where the annual income is less than £42,600 per year
  • The students’ household is located in an area that traditionally has had low levels of participation in higher education as defined by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)

Part-time students will need to make an application and provide evidence of their household income to the Financial Aid Office if they believe they meet these eligibility criteria.

Applications can be submitted once students are registered on their course and have been in attendance for two weeks. Application forms will be available from the Financial Aid Office from 24 September 2012.

Applicants will be informed whether they have met the University’s criteria for the financial support package once the University is in receipt of all relevant information.
