Financial support from the Government

Tuition fee loan

You do not have to pay your tuition fees up front. The Government provides a loan for tuition fees for students from England. You do not start to make repayments until the April after you graduate, and until you are earning over £21,000 per year. Students who normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland will receive financial support from the Scottish Government, the Welsh Assembly Government or the Northern Ireland Executive as appropriate. EU students from outside the UK that meet eligibility criteria will have access to the tuition fee loan, although generally they will not be entitled to support for living costs. The tuition fee loan is not assessed by household income. Part-time students will be able to apply for a tuition fee loan and will not have to pay for their course up front.

Living cost loan

Living cost loans are available to full-time UK students. This loan is to help with costs such as food, accommodation and travel. The maximum loan available for those who live away from home and study at a university outside of London is £5,500. A loan of up to £4,375 is available if you live at home. You can apply for a living cost loan for each year of study. Part-time and EU students are generally not eligible for the living cost loan.

65% of the total loan amount is non-means tested (not based on household income). The remaining 35% will be based on household income.

Living cost grant

Grants are also available to assist with living costs; these do not need to be repaid. If your household income is below £25,000 you will be entitled to a full grant of £3,354; if your household income is between £25,000 and £42,600 you will be entitled to a partial grant of between £3,354 and £50. The living cost grant is also means tested (based on household income).

You can find out how much support you might be entitled to using our 2013 student support calculator.

How do I apply for government financial support?

If you live in England, you apply for government financial support via Student Finance England. Student Finance England will determine the level of loan and grant for which you are eligible.

If you are an EU student, you will need to submit a paper application form (EU12N) to the Student Finance Services European Team. You can download the form and a guide to help you with your application.

Use our student support calculator to find out what financial support you might be eligible for in 2013.

Repayment of loans

Detailed information about loan repayments can be found on the Student Loans Company repayment website but here are a few key facts:

  • The tuition fee loan and the living cost loan are added together and paid off as one loan.
  • You do not start to make repayments until the April after you graduate, and until you are earning over £21,000 per year.
  • You will repay 9% of anything earned over £21,000 per year.
  • Repayments are linked to earnings, not the amount of money borrowed.
  • If the loan is not paid off after 30 years, any amount remaining is written off.
  • The loan will not go on your credit file and is unlikely to impact your ability to get a mortgage
  • If you have been studying part-time, you may begin to pay off your loan from April 2016. Check Directgov website for updates.
