Postgraduate Students

Beginning a postgraduate degree is a huge venture and it is a creative process. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed; experiencing a creative block; procrastinating; working too hard but not being as effective as you would like to be; reaching for a level of perfection that is creating just too much pressure; losing your focus or your motivation. Come and see one of our counsellors for a half hour assessment. This does not commit you to regular counselling sessions but it can help to talk to someone who is not involved directly with your work. We have lots of experience of working with postgraduate students and can suggest some helpful techniques which can support you to deal effectively with some of the above.

The normal events of everyday life can bring levels of stress which seriously distract you from your work. It can help to come and talk to someone. Excessive stress can stop or limit your creative flow and we can explore with you ways of de-stressing that would best suit your particular situation.

It may also help to seek out other postgraduate students who are further on in their studies. They may have found ways of tackling some of those difficulties that come up all too often.

It is most important to take time out for fun and relaxation. Do trust that when you are reading copious amounts or researching over an intense period you will benefit from time out. Sport, seeing friends, partying, going for walks, reading or watching something light and entertaining; whatever you enjoy most. What you have taken in needs space and time to grow and develop. This is part of the learning process. You will come back to work refreshed and energised.

We wish you all success and hope that you enjoy your time here. If we can help or support you in any way, do call in to the Counselling Service in Ig.2, Keynes College (behind the duck pond).
