Research centre helps NHS south-east to develop wide range of new service ideas

Kent, together with the universities of Brighton and Surrey, runs the Research Design Service South East (RDS SE), a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) -funded resource. This helps NHS staff by encouraging the development of high-quality research for the benefit of patients. The three universities provide free advice on all aspects of preparing grant applications, including: finding suitable funding sources; building a research team; designing a study; writing lay summaries; identifying the resources required for a successful project; and involving patients and the public.

Slipping through the net: Homeless people in Kent

This new report sets out to present a snap shot of how the agencies, homeless people and the services that are set up to assist them, are perceived by each other. The purpose of the report is to generate debate and enable “both sides” to enter into open and honest dialogue.

Systematic Literature Review ‘Readmission to Hospital’ Project

The review was conducted in preparation for developing an intervention or intervention programme which could be piloted in East Kent to reduce readmission rates across the three hospital sites. The review is being used in the preparation and development of a proposal for an externally funded research project to evaluate the intervention systematically and independently.

Slice Sampling Mixture Models

A new article from CHSS's Maria Kalli with M.Kalli, J.E.Griffin and S. G.Walker which proposes a more efficient version of the slice sampler for Dirichlet process mixture models described by Walker (Commun. Stat., Simul. Comput. 36:45–54, 2007). This new sampler allows for the fitting of infinite mixture models with a wide-range of prior specifications.

Employment support for carers - key findings from a University of Kent report

This pragmatic factorial trial, with cluster randomization of practices, will evaluate the effectiveness and costeffectiveness of different models of screening to identify hazardous and harmful drinkers in primary care and different intensities of brief intervention to reduce excessive drinking in primary care patients.

Am I Bovvered? - phase one report - executive summary

A participative action research study to develop, implement and evaluate physical activity interventions with girls.
The ‘Am I Bovvered?’ project is a two-year study aiming to develop, implement and evaluate sustainable exercise-based interventions with girls aged 11-15 years in order to improve their engagement in regular physical activity. This report summarises the findings from the first phase of this three-part project. This was an exploratory phase of the study, using focus groups with girls aged 11-12 and 14-15, recruited from two schools in Thanet, East Kent. Available here as a PDF.

University researchers encourage public participation in new Kent Survey of Health and Lifestyle

Researchers at the Centre for Health Services Studies [1] (CHSS), University of Kent, are delighted with the current number of responses to the 2008 Kent Health and Lifestyle Survey but remind anyone who has received a questionnaire that the deadline for returns is fast approaching.
Findings from the survey, which has been sponsored by Kent County Council [2], will help the NHS and local government target money and services to local needs. The focus this year is on exercise and physical activity.
