Buddhist Meditation Society

Buddha Statue
The Buddhist Meditation Society provides students and staff with the opportunity to practice meditation and learn about Buddhist techniques for developing peace of mind.

We meet every week during term time — everyone is welcome, you do not have to be a Buddhist to benefit from these meditation techniques. There is always an opportunity at the end of the class to ask questions and eat biscuits!

Catholic Society

St John Stone “Biggest and best on campus...”, “Most wide-ranging programme of any society...”, so wrote KRED, the student newspaper.

  • Maybe it’s because we have 500+ members...
  • Maybe it’s because we have our own club room at St John Stone House, the Catholic Chaplaincy, with satellite TV and its own fully licensed bar, The Barque Inn — “The cheapest bar on campus” (our chaplain has a publican’s licence!)...
  • Maybe it’s because of our trips like Bruges — The Venice of the North or Char-à-banc to Cambridge...
  • Maybe it’s because of our weekend retreat: Paris in the Springtime...
  • Maybe it’s because every Tuesday we have challenging speakers from Cabinet Ministers to Miners’ Leaders...
  • Maybe it’s because we pay for helpers each Easter to go on the HCPT Pilgrimage to Lourdes...
Whatever the reason: Whether you are committed, lapsed, or simply curious to come to the biggest, the most international, and the friendliest society on campus — the Cathsoc is for you!

St Vincent de Paul Society

SVP Logo
The St Vincent de Paul Society at the Cathsoc is our student volunteer group. It is associated with the international SVP movement. We are committed to obey Our Lord’s command to love God and our neighbour by helping those in need.

Our SVP Group is ideal for busy students who are already committed to demanding academic courses. Members are asked to dedicate only two hours a week to helping out in the community. We meet every Tuesday evening, and everybody is welcome to the meetings to learn more about our work and activities.

Chinese Christian Fellowship

Christian Performing Arts Society

CPAS Logo
CPAS began in 2001 with the vision of using creative arts to glorify God and create an opportunity for people to develop their talents through performance and worship. The society is a great way to meet and encourage other people and is open to everybody, Christian or not.

Even if you think you don’t have a talent, just come as you are and learn as you go. We work with a Christian ethos and we want to keep God at the centre of what we are doing and we ask members to respect that.

Christian Union

The CU has two main aims:

  • To bring God’s Kingdom to the University of Kent.
  • To encourage its members to know and love God — in order that the first aim becomes a possibility.

Ichthus Methodist Group

Ichthus is a Christian discussion group held in St Peter’s Methodist Church (in the city centre). We are a relaxed and friendly group and discuss a variety of contemporary issues from Christian viewpoints.

We have related Bible Studies on alternate weeks, prayers, and some purely social events too. Get in touch if you are interested in coming along or would like to know more!

Islamic Society

The Islamic Society at the University of Kent has existed for many years. There is a large Muslim community at the University and the society tries its best to keep all the Muslims close to each other and has various functions aimed to help people become better acquainted with one another.

Jewish Society

Kent University JSoc welcomes Jews of all kinds, along with anyone who is interested in finding out more about the Jewish way of life. We meet for Friday night meals and social gatherings and to celebrate the major Jewish holidays. We are an international society and have a warm and friendly atmoshpere. Kent JSoc is part of UJS, the Union of Jewish Students.

New Life Group

New Life Students
New Life is a cultural and international mix of people. Canterbury is a very international place and this is reflected in the way God has made us a House of prayer for all nations (Mark 11:17).

The New Life Group is supported by the New Life Pentecostal Church. There is a warm friendly atmosphere and visitors will feel immediately welcome. We are a Cell Church which means that everyone is encouraged to participate actively!

Society of Friends (Quakers)

Students and staff of all faiths and none are welcome to attend our Meetings for Worship. Join us on Campus on the last Wednesday of the month during term time, or on Sundays at the Friends Meeting House downtown.
