Careers and Employability Service

Careers advice

Our friendly, helpful team of professional careers advisers is available to help you with all aspects of your career planning and decision-making, such as:

  • Making decisions about your future career
  • Planning your job search strategy
  • Getting relevant work experience
  • Making applications and preparing for interviews
  • Looking at postgraduate study options
  • Changing or leaving your course of study

These are some of the issues that we deal with most frequently, but you can ask us absolutely any questions related to your future after University so don’t hesitate to come and see us!

Our advice services are impartial, free of charge and open to all students of the University of Kent, whatever your year of study, and to Kent graduates for up to three years after graduation.

Confidentiality is important to us and no information that you give to a careers adviser, whether verbally or in writing, will be communicated to any other individual or any other department within the University without your specific permission.

Careers advice is available through a variety of different methods:

Quick queries

A careers adviser is on duty at regular times to help with quick queries: see www.kent.ac.uk/ces/locations/index.html for times at your campus. These queries are handled on a drop-in basis: you don’t need to book an appointment to see a careers adviser but may need to wait for a short time if there are several people waiting to be seen.

Quick-query interviews should be limited to approximately ten minutes. For example, you might want to ask the adviser to read over your CV, for advice on sources of job vacancies or help with preparing for an interview.

If you have a more complex query or problem - such as "I have no idea what I want to do!" the adviser will probably suggest that you make an appointment for a longer careers guidance interview but will also be able to offer some ideas for self-assessment and careers research to help you get started.

Careers guidance interviews

If your query is likely to take longer, then book in for a careers guidance interview. Here, you will have time to talk things over in more detail with the careers adviser for your subject - see our Staff pages for details. A careers interview typically lasts 30 or 40 minutes, although the length of time taken is up to you (up to a maximum of one hour).

Please note that appointments with careers advisers cannot be booked by email - we need to talk to you to give you the best service so please call into the CES to book an appointment in person, or phone us on 01227 823299 (University extension 3299).

Advice by email

We can also give advice by email to:

  • University of Kent graduates
  • Current students who are unable to visit the Careers and Employability Service in person, in particular part-time students.
