The Army

PROFILE: Army Officer

INVOLVES: Leadership - people management & decision making. Looking after soldiers' careers as well as their welfare & that of their family, organising everything from expeditions to summer balls. Equipment management.
RELATED JOBS: Other armed forces i.e. Navy, RAF, Royal Marines. Police officer. Fire officer
SATISFACTIONS: Responsibility - command a troop of approx. 30 soldiers after completing Sandhurst - 1 year.Comradeship. Complete change of scene & job every 2 years. - world wide postings.
NEGATIVES: Can be dangerous. Difficulty in maintaining relationships due to postings to far flung places. Paid to work 24 hours a day!
SKILLS: planning, leading, cooperating, decision making, spoken communication, physical fitness.
ADVANCEMENT: A graduate will automatically get 21/2 yrs. seniority.On commissioning - Second Lieutenant. After 1 yr.- Lieutenant After 3 1 /2 yrs. – Captain From age 28: eligible for promotion to Major. All depending on confidential reports & passing promotional exams.
DEGREE: Any degree subject - degree not necessary.
VACANCY SOURCES: University Liaison Officer visits University Careers Service regularly to see interested students.
TIPS: See University Liaison Officer at University. 'Get fit, be committed, have pride in country. Know your current affairs. Have confidence & a positive, determined attitude. Flexibility & adaptability are essential to cope with varied postings. The upper age limit for Sandhurst is now 29.
