• These emails are general in nature (I haven't the time to personalise them for each subject area!) but we do try to include something for everyone. Some people complain that these lists are dominated by business and computing jobs, but we can only put in vacancies that employers send to us!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

> My degree course was Multimedia tech and design. Since graduating I have been applying for Flash related jobs however I have more recently been looking in web content producer roles starting at junior level.  I was wondering what kind of cv I might need to put together for this

CV would be very similar to the creative CV at http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/cv/cvexamples.htm 

There would be a bit more emphasis on project management skills, content writing skills and liaising teamworking skills and of course a web portfolio http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/cv/portfolios.htm would help.

Experienced web content producers seem to have salaries around the £25-30k mark which would normally put them slightly out of the range of new graduates as they would normally require a couple of years experience, although there are a few vacancies for junior content producers which might be ideal. New graduates start at about £16-18k. Some content producer roles focus more on the text side where the role is closer to journalism and would normally require evidence of strong writing skills. You will certainly find many more jobs in web design that in just Flash. The key skills are likely to be CSS, AJAX, Dreamweaver, PHP and JavaScript. Actionscript is now based on JavaScript so this should not be a problem. I would look at a range of jobs in web design and development, junior content production and Flash. If you can get any one of these you should be able to move on after a year or two to a more senior role where you can specialise more.

Many of these specialise in short-term science work and would give you valuable lab experience to allow you to apply for forensics jobs on your return.

I'm hoping to move to Halifax in Canada for a year (hopefully longer if I get sponsored) after I graduate in October next year. Any assistance you can give or anything you can think of that could help would be much appreciated.

It's pretty rare that we get vacancies from Canada, except BUNAC etc.

Vacancy Database

Please note that we now have a new vacancy system in place to list vacancies for graduates, placement students and interns notified to the University of Kent Careers and Employability Service. The new web address is http://kent.prospects.ac.uk - please update your bookmarks.

Our vacancy database http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/jobs/index.htm has over 300 vacancies many from EMPLOYERS PARTICULARLY LOOKING FOR KENT GRADUATES. The vacancy database also has postgraduate study and work experience placements sections, with some very interesting opportunities. You will probably be getting vacancy emails from a number of sources (this is very wise), but please don't ignore these emails. Some of the advertised jobs are specifically aimed at Kent graduates, often by employers who are themselves graduates from Kent, or have recruited a Kent graduate and have been impressed by them, so often competition for vacancies in our vacancy database is often much lower!

What are Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Schemes?

• KTP www.ktponline.org.uk is a government-funded scheme that places graduates in Small and Medium Sized Organisations to work on knowledge transfer projects central to the needs of the company.
• As well as salaried employment, graduates receive support to study for a higher degree and to gain a management qualification.
• There are many KTP schemes in our vacancy database http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/jobs/index.htm look for (KTP) in the vacancy title!
• Vacancies arise throughout the year in a wide range of employers and locations and projects last between 12 to 36 months.
• KTPs can help to enhance your career prospects by providing you with an opportunity to manage a challenging project, central to an organisation's strategic development and long-term growth.
• Most (but not all) vacancies are for graduates in science, engineering, IT and business-related subjects. You need to be qualified to an upper 2nd class degree or better.
• Around 62% of KTP Associates are employed by the host company when the project ends.
