• You may have already had a copy of this particular list as we still send out to degree subject email lists until shortly after the end of term. Once your Kent email address stops working (usually in late July for undergraduates finishing this term), we will only send you this list. Until then we think it is better that you hear about opportunities twice rather than not at all!
• These emails are general in nature (I haven't the time to personalise them for each subject area!) but we do try to include something for everyone. Some people complain that these lists are dominated by business and computing jobs, but we can only put in vacancies that employers send to us!

Firstly you would need to do lots of research on publishing. Editorial is the most competitive job in publishing so I'd suggest you also look at marketing, production, sales etc.

> I want to get some teaching experience to help me to get on to a PGCE

It's very important to get some experience in a school in the age range you wish to teach before you apply, both to make sure teaching is right for you and also to help you prepare for interview questions about your experience of teaching. A day or two may be sufficient for shortage subjects such as secondary mathematics or science, whereas you may need a few weeks for primary, history and other competitive areas (not necessarily in one block: it could be one afternoon per week over several terms).

• The TDA ( Training and Development Agency for schools) www.tda.gov.uk lists a variety of ways of gaining an insight into teaching at www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/experienceteaching.aspx.
  The "Open Schools Programme" allows you to spend a day observing your chosen subject or age range being taught in one of 700 participating schools.
  Taster courses and open days are organised by PGCE providers to give an insight into teaching. Taster courses last three days and are aimed at shortage subjects or candidates from under-represented groups (e.g. men for primary). Details are on the TDA web site.

• Volunteering: Most local authorities run schemes for voluntary mentors to work with pupils on a one-to-one basis. You can find details of all the schools in your area at Edubase www.edubase.gov.uk/home.xhtml
• Paid work as a teaching assistant, lab technician or learning mentor. These are advertised on local authority websites or via recruitment agencies.
• If all the above fails, the easiest way to get experience is normally to contact your old school and ask the teacher of the subject you wish to teach if you can help them for a few days.

BBC R&D has a worldwide reputation for contributing to and leading the engineering research and development of many of the key broadcast technologies that have been introduced over the last 50 years. We are looking for Technologists in both Manchester and London, so please do specify your preference when applying. The research work is mainly on new technologies which are expected to be rolled out over a 1 to 5 year timescale and they require both in-depth theoretical knowledge and also a practical approach to potential deployment. The Trainee Research Technologist will be expected to develop the technical and innovation skills required to contribute to and steer future technical developments within the BBC.  This includes undertaking both technology research and the leadership of technology development throughout the BBC on a variety of projects; either as stand-alone smaller projects or as parts of larger projects where the Trainee Research Technologist will work with teams of more senior Technologists.  This is a role that would challenge and engage the strongest of candidates. As such we'd like to see the following in your profile:
Ideally you’ll need to be a high academic achiever, with a minimum of a 2:1 or equivalent (by September 2012) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science, together with an A Level in Mathematics or be able to demonstrate strong equivalent knowledge and experience.

FREE Journalism Workshops

Do you want to work in journalism? Come to a free journalism workshop where you can find out what it is like to be a journalist and everything that you need to know about starting a career in journalism. It is designed as an informal and fun session for you to learn what makes a news story and how to write a story for a newspaper; You will produce your own story from ‘breaking news’ and get some guidance and feedback from our (working journalist) tutors. You will also have the opportunity to learn what editors are looking for when recruiting, the different career options available and what you need to do to start your journalism career.

Vacancy Database

Our vacancy database http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/jobs/index.htm has over 300 vacancies many from EMPLOYERS PARTICULARLY LOOKING FOR KENT GRADUATES. The vacancy database also has postgraduate study and work experience placements sections, with some very interesting opportunities. You will probably be getting vacancy emails from a number of sources (this is very wise), but please don't ignore these emails. Some of the advertised jobs are specifically aimed at Kent graduates, often by employers who are themselves graduates from Kent, or have recruited a Kent graduate and have been impressed by them, so often competition for vacancies in our vacancy database is often much lower!

What are Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Schemes?

• KTP www.ktponline.org.uk is a government-funded scheme that places graduates in Small and Medium Sized Organisations to work on knowledge transfer projects central to the needs of the company.
• As well as salaried employment, graduates receive support to study for a higher degree and to gain a management qualification.
• There are many KTP schemes in our vacancy database http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/jobs/index.htm look for (KTP) in the vacancy title!
• Vacancies arise throughout the year in a wide range of employers and locations and projects last between 12 to 36 months.
• KTPs can help to enhance your career prospects by providing you with an opportunity to manage a challenging project, central to an organisation's strategic development and long-term growth.
• Most (but not all) vacancies are for graduates in science, engineering, IT and business-related subjects. You need to be qualified to an upper 2nd class degree or better.
• Around 62% of KTP Associates are employed by the host company when the project ends.
