CAREERS ADVISORY SERVICE - UNIVERSITY OF KENT
EQUALITY & DIVERSITY STATEMENT
The University of Kent Careers and Employability Service (CES) is committed to the ideals
and practice of Equality and Diversity in all aspects of its work. It aims to
provide a service that is free from unlawful and unfair discrimination and that
cherishes diversity in all with whom it works.
Its practice pays due recognition to the Equal Opportunities policies of the
University of Kent and the Association of Graduate Careers and Employability Services
(AGCAS).
The CAS aims to take the following actions:
Students and Graduates
- Take all reasonable steps to ensure that all students and graduates have
optimum access to the range of services that are in operation. This includes
the provision of an induction loop system for use by students who have a hearing
impairment.
- Publish a statement demonstrating its commitment to equal opportunities
on publicity that goes to students and graduates.
- Ensure that an individual member of staff is identified to act as a representative
of the CAS on Equal Opportunity committees and issues within the university.
This individual will work together with other CAS staff to ensure the dissemination
of information and practices relating to equality and diversity.
Staff
- Use language that is free from bias in all communications within the CAS
whether written or verbal.
- Take every opportunity to participate in university training opportunities
relating to equality and diversity.
- The effective implementation of this Equality and Diversity statement demands
the co-operation of both the organisation and the individuals who work within
it. Staff are, therefore, obliged to act in accordance with the statement.
Information, Advice and Guidance
- Ensure that no material will be displayed that could be construed as unfairly
or unlawfully discriminatory. Information that actively promotes equal opportunities
will be particularly welcomed.
- Support all students and graduates in their career choice in a spirit of
equality and diversity. Through this positive use of information, advice and
guidance the CAS will encourage all students to reach their full potential.
Services to employers
- Take all reasonable steps to ensure that all employment, vacation work,
placement and work experience opportunities are advertised equally to students.
Where appropriate certain vacancies may be targeted if this is in accordance
with legislation.
- Actively encourage good practice with regard to equality and diversity with
employer partners during correspondence, visits, presentations and recruitment
activities.
- Actively support initiatives that reflect positive action.
- Make an induction loop system available to employers who have a hearing
impairment.
Other services
- Support other university services in their efforts to encourage equality
and diversity throughout the university. These services include, but are not
limited to, the Disability Support Unit and the Equal Opportunities Officer.
