Careers related to architecture
Construction is a massive sector, embracing civil and structural engineering, construction, building services and surveying, and blurring into engineering construction, where scientific, mechanical engineering and construction disciplines all meet. It incorporates everything from house building to constructing dams and bridges; to road, rail and air transport infrastructures; and industrial plant, power stations and gas platforms. Housing Management involves administering housing estates and property on behalf of local authorities or housing associations, taking account of both business and social factors. This may include investigating applications and assessing priorities for housing, including rehousing, and arranging for transfers and exchanges of property; arranging for the collection of rents, investigating circumstances surrounding any arrears and liaising with social workers and agencies to help families in difficulties, and arranging for the properties to be kept in good repair, looking into complaints and making sure that any tenancy conditions are observed. Qualities required include: an interest in people and an enjoyment of working with them, numeracy, flexibility, patience, good humour, tolerance and common sense. Landscape Architecture
- The job market at the moment seems fairly stable but the number of vacancies in the public sector is definitely in decline due to cuts at Natural England, English Heritage and local authorities.
- A number of graduates have gone abroad to take up graduate positions in Australia (whose landscape industry is currently very strong), China and the Middle East.
- Landscape courses, in particular the graduate programmes, continue to recruit fairly well.

It has just published a salary survey, the results of which are now available here. The average salary for fully qualified landscape architects in the UK is £35,471. The average salary for Licentiate Members (the grade for those who have completed their initial professional education) is £23,572.
