University congratulates Culture Award winners

The University has offered its congratulations to all winners of Canterbury's Cultural Awards 2012.

The University, which makes a significant cultural contribution to the region, sponsored the Cultural Landscape Award, presented to a cultural organisation, group or individual making a significant positive impact to the district’s environment, architecture or public space.

Created by Canterbury City Council 'to recognise the important role of culture as part of the history and fabric of the Canterbury District, to highlight individual achievements and to celebrate the quality, diversity and vibrancy that makes up the cultural scene here and across East Kent', the Awards took place on 21 June at Augustine House, Canterbury.

Among the shortlisted candidates and winners were University alumni, including the innovative and acclaimed theatre group Little Cauliflower.

Professor Keith Mander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Kent, presented the University's Award to Canterbury City Council for the new Marlowe Theatre. He said: 'I was delighted to make this presentation to such an outstanding cultural project as the new Marlowe Theatre. It is a marvellous addition to the cultural facilities in the area.’

Professor Mander also explained how the University would soon be making its own further contribution to the region's cultural facilities with its Colyer-Fergusson Music Building, which opens in the autumn. 'This will create a new vibrant arts complex for students, staff and the local community on our Canterbury campus,' he said. ‘It will also provide a wonderful complement to the new Marlowe Theatre and our own existing Gulbenkian Theatre and Cinema.'
