Liam Burns, President of the NUS: 'Pound in your Pocket'
Spring 2013: Open Lecture Series
Speaker: Liam Burns, President of the NUS

The living costs faced by students and the means by which they meet those costs are significant 'hidden issues' in the further and higher education funding debate. In 2012, NUS carried out a major programme of research looking into the issue in depth. It was found that across the board, students are struggling to make ends meet, concentrate on their studies and stay the course because of financial difficulties. In this lecture, Liam Burns, NUS President, will present findings from the research and discuss potential policy responses to tackle the problems involved.

Liam Burns studied Physics at Heriot-Watt University before being elected as Vice-President (Education & Welfare, 2006-2007) and subsequently President (2008-2009) of the university's Students' Association. Burns went on to serve as Depute President (2009-2010) and later President (2010-2011) of NUS Scotland, before being elected as NUS President in 2011.

Burns was re-elected NUS President by delegates at the NUS National Conference in April 2012.He stood on a manifesto criticising government cuts to education.
