Event and Experience Design

Paul Gambrill is a designer who creates brand experiences, environments, events and digital journeys for many leading companies.

From the Daleks to 'La Boheme' , and from the brand launch of the Mazda CX-7 to a new environmental museum in Athens, Paul's 'plate-spinning' creative career has taken him all over Europe and North America.

Paul started his career as a designer for stage and television, working for the BBC Special Effects Department and for several leading repertory theatres around the country. He was an active member of the Royal Court Youth Theatre, designing many studio productions for acclaimed directors Danny Boyle and Simon Curtis.  After winning an Arts Council Design Bursary, he spent a year at the Royal Opera House researching opera design and producing highly detailed models for the Houses' opera and ballet companies.

In the late 80's he was appointed Head of Design for the Tussauds Group and given the opportunity to create an in-house multi-disciplined design team responsible for the creation and development of many of the UK's most successful, award-winning visitor attractions including Chessington World of Adventures, Warwick Castle, Rock Circus and Madame Tussauds. During this time Paul spent several months at the Walt Disney Studios in Florida researching Theme Park design and in particular the research and development of animated figures.

Paul is a senior creative for a number of leading international creative agencies based in London and over the past few years has been designing and developing spectacular brand experiences, environments, events and digital journeys for many leading companies including Sony, Shell, British Airways, Nike, and Orange. He is also a design consultant for the Imperial War Museum, the Churchill Museum, and the Fries Museum in Holland. Paul's teaching experience includes collaborative design projects at the Royal College of Music (Opera School), The Royal Academy of Music and UCA at Rochester, Canterbury and Epsom.

He is currently a lecturer at the University of Kent, designing and delivering a broad range of multi-disciplinary modules, and is constantly exploring ways in which to develop exciting and innovative partnerships with industry through ‘live’ project bursaries, and creative industries apprenticeships.

Royal College of Music (Opera School) -  Stage Craft, Scenography, & Production Practice. Opening Production of the New Britten Theatre – ‘Il Trittico’

MBA Creative Industries (Event Delivery) Module design, delivery and convening, for UCA (Rochester).

TONIC – Creative Business Project – Business course delivery for people working across the creative industries. (projects included a module on Event Design / Production and one focussing on Creative Thinking, in partnership with UCA, University of Kent, and Canterbury Christ Church University.

‘Business First’ – Graduate Placement Project

Design and delivery of an intensive employability training programme. ‘Creative Thinking’ Business First is a project that helps businesses tackle the challenges of the recession by making the most of talented graduates. The graduates receive intensive employability training before they are placed with a local business, where they in turn benefit from valuable hands on experience and a great first step towards their future careers.

Business First launched in May 2009 with a grant from Higher Education Funding Council for England and is run by Canterbury Christ Church University, in partnership with the Universities of Kent, Greenwich and the Creative Arts.

Ideas Factory – Creative Agency Feasibility Study.  The project aims to undertake a study of the feasibility of starting a Creative Agency to work within the School of Arts (Medway). It is expected that the agency will operate within a wide sector of the creative industries including arts events/ festivals/ performing arts, and the corporate events industries including brand launches, events and experiential marketing.

Anticipated benefits :

  • Enhance T&L, providing a range of live projects to use as teaching case studies, and opportunities for work placement / internship; a working studio running in parallel to a teaching and learning studio.
  • Raise the profile of the School of Arts, offering a unique feature that can enhance UG and PG recruitment.
  • Provide us with the opportunity to develop partnerships with the corporate, public, celebratory and community arts sectors.
  • Ensure currency of practice within the department.
  • Provide job opportunities for graduates, keeping skills in the region, enhancing employability.
  • Enable us to employ high level creative practitioners, contributing to the degree programmes alongside their current practice.
  • Provide research models.
  • Add further quality to both public and private sector projects.
  • Provide additional income.
