History and Philosophy of Art: Two perspectives, one subject matter. The History and Philosophy of Art programme combines the history of the visual arts with the study of the ideas that have driven artists to make the works they have, and that help us to understand those works and why they are significant and valuable.
We have established strengths in contemporary art, photography, aesthetics and European painting from the renaissance. These strengths are reflected in the different ‘pathways’ we offer through the programme enabling students to give their degree a distinctive emphasis.
In the HPA programme there are also a number of practice-based courses that enable students to learn by doing. These include courses such as
The Fine Art programme at Kent offers a student centred experience. We encourage students to specialise within the medium of their choice, whether that is painting, sculpture, photography, or installation.
The course has been designed with a particularly intellectual ethos in which practice and thought about contemporary art are closely integrated. Students take a combination of history of art and aesthetics modules that inform and complement the studio modules in which they develop their creative practice. Students thus have access to a wide range of practicing artist-teachers, as well as academic staff in History and Philosophy of Art.
The programme is supported by excellent facilities, including well-equipped studios and teaching darkroom, a full range of supporting equipment, and a well-stocked library. More details

This degree programme offers a unique opportunity to combine the art historical study of the static image – the painting, photograph, print and drawing – with the study of the moving image in an integrated single honours degree. It provides a perspective on art and film that cuts across the boundaries of different visual media, exploring the art of film, pictorial art in film, and the mutual influences of the pictorial and film media. Visual and Performed Arts is a combined subjects degree programme that draws together the three programmes run by the School of Arts.
The programme emphasises a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the ways in which the fine arts, drama and film have contributed to the history of culture and continue to make this contribution. It is specifically designed for students who have a broad interest in the arts, but who don’t want to be restricted to one discipline.
The degree has both academic and practical elements, but it places greater emphasis upon the academic. During years 2 and 3 you have the opportunity to specialise in film, drama or art history.
