Pathways of Study

When you study History and Philosophy of Art at Kent you are given the opportunity to focus your studies through one of four specialised pathways representing areas of teaching and research strength within the section...

Art History

The Art History pathway focuses on the development of European arts from the ancient world through to today. Through a wide range of options you will have the opportunity to study in detail particular periods, artists, movements or genre, encountering a wide range of the approaches art historians have developed for the interpretation of art.

Contemporary Arts

The Contemporary Arts pathway concentrates on the development, meaning and cultural significance of the art produced in the last 100 years, but with an emphasis upon the arts now. The range of options is again designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the revolutions in art practice associated with modernism, conceptual art and post-modernism.

Philosophy of Art

The Philosophy of Art pathway focuses upon exploring the nature and value of art, both in general and in relation to its history and its various forms. The emphasis here is upon the intellectual underpinnings of artistic practice, as well as the theoretical understanding of art from the ancient Greeks to contemporary post-modern thought.

Photographic Studies

The Photographic Studies pathway concentrates on the history and aesthetics of the photographic image from its invention to the present day. Kent is renowned for its expertise in the history and theory of photography, and the range of options available enable students to gain a broad and yet detailed understanding of this important medium.
