StatueUndergraduate Studies

History and Philosophy of Art: Two perspectives, one subject matter. The History and Philosophy of Art programme combines the history of the visual arts with the study of the ideas that have driven artists to make the works they have, and that help us to understand those works and why they are significant and valuable. We have established strengths in contemporary art, photography, aesthetics and European painting from the renaissance. These strengths are reflected in the different ‘pathways’ we offer through the programme enabling students to give their degree a distinctive emphasis. Click here for more on the pathways of study.

In the HPA programme there are also a number of practice-based courses that enable students to learn by doing. These include courses such as print collecting and curating, photography, visual arts writing, drawing, and an internship course enabling students to work for a major arts organisation.
