Curriculum requirements for Part-time students
The BA Honours programme at UKM Tonbridge comprises a Certificate, Diploma and Degree that supports flexible part-time for those with an interest and aptitude for studying Art History. For more information on the programme or just an informal chat on part-time study opportunities at Kent, please contact Grant Pooke on 01227 764000 x3457 (or email: G.F.Pooke@kent.ac.uk).
Certificate students will take the following 4 2-unit modules continuously assessed over two years. Please note the ordering may vary from one year of presentation to the next, subject to teaching patterns.
Please note: This programme is open to students wishing to transfer academic credits in from the Certificate in Combined Studies Programme (CCS) or from other academic providers.
The Certificate, Diploma and Degree strands of the programme are continuously assessed through the submission of two essays for each two-unit module undertaken, in accordance with Faculty of Humanities Examination Conventions.
Conventions and customary structures for part-time interim awards are outlined in the Faculty Part II Examination Conventions Handbook (Appendix A & B). Learning aims and outcomes, deadlines, assignment titles and reading lists accompany each of the module syllabus and teaching plans distributed by the programme convenor and explained by the module tutor at the start of the module. If you have any queries on these, please speak to your module tutor in the first instance or email the programme convenor: G.F.Pooke@kent.ac.uk.
However please note the following:
The Certificate, Diploma and BA Programmes are continuously assessed through the submission of essays for each two-unit module taken. There are no summative exams as such. For Certificate module Introduction to the History of Art as an Academic Discipline (HA306) students are asked to submit one piece of assessed work (3500-4000 words) in the form of a gallery evaluation. For the penultimate or final year module, The History of Art Dissertation (HA540) the submitted piece will be between 8000-10,000 words in length. All other Part II Diploma and Degree students will be expected to submit two 4000-4500 word assignments per two-unit module.
Part II modules for students taking the part-time HPA BA at Tonbridge:
The ordering of the modules offered will vary according to teaching and presentation schedules.
Submission of coursework
As with the full-time programme, the submission of work to deadline is expected. Each syllabus plan will clearly indicate the applicable dates. Naturally, in some cases, there may be good reason for a delay, but if you think this will apply personally, please speak to your module tutor in the first instance. Where there is a longer delay in submission, it will usually be necessary to submit a concessions request to the programme convenor. Any formal request made in this way, will be taken into account as part of the examining and moderation process.
Turnaround of coursework
Every effort will be made to mark and return work within a reasonable length of time, usually 2-3 weeks. However, please note that this will be subject to receiving submissions on time (see above). If, for example, several scripts are late in a given group, it may delay the forwarding of work for second marking and moderation. As with the full-time programme, your work will be moderated by other HPA staff.
Essential readings, photocopy handouts and other materials
There is a small contribution required from students to cover the costs of essential readings, photocopy handouts and other materials.
Library Support at the University Centre, Tonbridge
Core book provision is based in this collection for which you will have full use. The collection manager at the start of the module will notify the term opening dates to you. Multiple copies of key texts are retained, but please borrow responsibly and do not keep books longer than you need them. It is usually possible to request books from the main Templeman collection if required. Please speak to the library supervisor in the first instance. PC's have now been installed in the collection that should allow off-site perusal of the main collection.
Student Progression
Irrespective of the reasons and the stage at which you opt to join the part time BA programme, every effort will be made to support and guide you as appropriate. For example, in recent years, some students from the programme have variously undertaken postgraduate study at UKC; the Courtauld Institute, the University of Essex, Birkbeck College, University of London and the Centre for Jewish Cultural Studies. If you would like to discuss options and possibilities for further or perhaps full-time study, please contact the programme convenor, Grant Pooke (G.F.Pooke@kent.ac.uk).
