History and Philosophy of Art

Aesthetics Research Group

The Aesthetics Research Group (ARG) coordinates, enables and promotes research in philosophy of art and aesthetics at the University of Kent. The group brings together faculty and postgraduate students from various departments, including History & Philosophy of Art, Film, and Philosophy, and is characterised by a strong interdisciplinary ethos.
The group has particular research expertise around visual art forms including painting, photography and film; depiction and representation; intersections between ethics and aesthetics; beauty, taste and the sublime in 18th century aesthetics; the aesthetics of popular music; the interrelations between art and science; and topics in the contemporary philosophy of art.
