The Fine Art programme at Kent offers a student centred experience. Today, students of Fine Art are just as likely to stage exhibitions, produce critical and creative writing, make films and performances, as well as creating ‘traditional' art for the ‘white cube' gallery environment. This results in a changing dynamic for making and studying art. We encourage students to follow their own research interests and experiment with different types of art-making, whether that is painting, sculpture, film, video and photography, installation or curation and critical writing.

Students in Fine Art have access to practicing artist-staff who have a wide range of multi disciplinary expertise. Our philosophy is that, whilst we run a cross disciplinary programme, we also recognise that in the demanding contemporary environment, students have the need and desire for core skills. The specific specialisms we support are painting, sculpture, film, video and photography, installation or curation and critical writing. As such, students have the opportunity to choose pathways at the end of the first year that will give a focused level of mentorship through dedicated workshops and tutorials.
The course integrates critical debate and the theory of art with the development of practice-based work. Supported by tutors, students are encouraged to realise their creative and intellectual potential by developing independent work through practice, and to take advantage of the rich culture of events, symposia and exhibitions that are a regular feature of University life. Students can further explore our unique interdisciplinary environment and can collaborate on projects with students from other creative arts disciplines such as, Music and Event and Experience Design. Students at Medway are engaged and enthusiastic and contribute to the energy that creates such a dynamic and challenging cultural environment.
