In an intriguing side step, Oscar winning Andrea Arnold – director of Red Road and Fish Tank, both gritty dramas set in defiantly unglamorous urban locations – has filmed her version of one of literature's most frequently adapted novels, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, the gothic, moor-set story about obsessive, lingering romantic love.
Kaya Scodelario (TV’s Skins) stars as Cathy; with newcomer James Howson as Heathcliff and Nichola Burley as Isabella Linton. Arnold’s casting (Howson is the first black Heathcliff, while Scodelario’s age is closer to Cathy’s in the book) shows she’s taken a fresh look at the novel, and is interested in creating a new kind of authenticity.
