Hailed to ecstatic reviews in the US, the intelligence, insight and sheer drive of J.C. Chandor’s ensemble drama about the 2008 financial collapse belie the fact that it’s his debut feature.
Brilliantly styled, it follows a group of bankers working in an institution loosely modelled on the ill-fated Lehmann Brothers as they gradually realise that it’s headed for collapse. A fantastic ensemble cast includes Zachary Quinto and Penn Badgley as young hot shots, Paul Bettany as their cynical supervisor, Stanley Tucci as a colleague who, after foretelling the apocalypse, is spirited away; and Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore and Jeremy Irons as varying levels of boss.
