Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) and Tom Hiddleston (Archipelago) star in director Terence Davies’ adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s stage play.
Weisz is Hester, stuck in a stagnant marriage with High Court judge William (Simon Russell Beale) when she falls irrevocably in love with RAF pilot Freddie (Hiddleston). But though she's besotted by him, his love for her seems uncertain. With a tone reminiscent of Joe Wright’s Atonement, setting a sweeping romance against harder considerations - here, post-war morality and social constraints - it’s gorgeous, bittersweet stuff.
