SUMMARY:Mozart's Sister (12a)
LOCATION:Cinema, The Gulbenkian, The University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NB
DESCRIPTION:Director René Féret’s (Solemn Communion) stimulating film is a speculative account of the childhood of Maria Anna ‘Nannerl’ Mozart - sister of the more famous Wolfgang - and her neglected musical talent. Originally the featured performer, she’s ceded her place as the main attraction to Wolfgang, as their father Leopold (Marc Barbe) tours his talented offspring in front of the royal courts of pre-French revolution Europe.\n\nApproaching marriageable age and forbidden to play the violin or compose, Nannerl chafes at the limitations imposed on her gender, but a friendship with the son and daughter of Louis XV offers an alternative path. A beautifully realised but also unusually naturalistic costume drama, Mozart’s Sister tells a captivating tale of family, talent and early feminism.\n\nhttp://www.kent.ac.uk/gulbenkian/Cinema/films/2012/june/2012-06-mozarts-sister.html
