General housing advice

Many students will need to consider renting accommodation off-campus, in the private sector, for their 2nd and 3rd years. This information is to raise awareness of some of the issues involved in renting off-campus accommodation. Take time to explore and get the most out of these pages.

To assist you in finding suitable accommodation, the University operates a web-based housing list and all properties on this list are members of the Canterbury City Council's student housing accreditation scheme. We would recommend that you use this list first when looking for accommodation.

Most students do not have landlord problems and the majority of property in the local area is of a good standard. However all students should protect themselves by ensuring that they understand the nature of their contract and are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities. The most important thing to remember is that a signed contract is binding. Any queries relating to contracts or landlord/tenant disputes should be directed to Student Advice Centre, Kent Union.

All students are advised to read the housing guide leaflet produced by Kent Hospitality before embarking on finding rental accommodation.

You may also wish to visit the off campus accommodation forum. This is a student-to-student service, where ad-hoc requests or notices regarding off-campus rooms may be advertised.
