Furniture, fittings and equipment

When you first arrive, please check that your furniture, fittings and equipment are all in order and report any discrepancies to your local Housekeeping Office.

Insurance

Accommodation costs include insurance for loss of personal possessions up to £4,000 in respect of claims arising from fire, flood or theft within the accommodation area, including losses by walk-in theft.  Students will be able to arrange additional cover online at the insurer’s website, for accidental damage or all risks on high value items such as iPhones and laptops.

Repairs and defects

Residents must report any maintenance defects or other problems with their accommodation at the earliest opportunity to the duty Housekeeping Supervisor, or in their absence to the local reception area.

Any emergency repairs that may be needed outside office hours should be reported to Campus Watch, who will decide whether a repair is urgent and will call out a member of the maintenance team if necessary.

For further information about repairs, defects and related issues, please read the Housekeeping section of the Student Life handbook.

Rubbish

Residents are responsible for the removal of rubbish from their accommodation. Refuse must be placed in the black and green sacks provided by Housekeeping and then put outside in the wheelie bins in designated area.

Recyclable items should be placed in the red sacks provided by Housekeeping and left in the designated area.

For further information about rubbish and related issues, please read the Housekeeping section of the Student Life handbook.

Items you may bring with you to University

In addition to personal items (bedding, towels etc), you may bring music centres, hairdryers, computers and televisions for use in your own room. However you may not bring any personal or hired cooking, refrigeration or heating appliances (this includes toasters, rice cookers etc) or any items of furniture.

Televisions

If you wish to watch 'live' television in your room, you will need to have your own television licence. See here for further information on TV licensing.

As space is limited in study bedrooms and TV aerial sockets are not available in most university accommodation we recommend that you do not bring a television set with you to University and instead view TV over the internet via your laptop.

IMPORTANT: If you view live TV over the internet you must have your own TV licence.

Bedding, bed linen and towels

One pillow is provided but you will need to bring your own bedding, bed linen and towels.

Alternatively, you may purchase bedding and towel packs from the University. The bedding pack includes a laundry bag, duvet, two duvet covers, two sheets and two pillowcases and the towel pack includes two bath towels, two hand towels and two face cloths.

Electrical supply and equipment

There are electrical sockets in each study-bedroom and rooms with en suite facilities or washbasins also have a shaver point.

The total electrical supply in each study-bedroom is only 1900 watts (1.9 kilowatts). This means that, for example, if you and your neighbour both have a kettle and hairdryer switched on at the same time, the electricity supply may 'trip out'. If this happens you will need to contact reception to ask for the trip switch to be reset.

The University reserves the right to PAT test any item of electrical equipment brought onto campus.

Cleaning and laundry facilities

If you have en suite facilities with your room, the Housekeeping staff will clean those on a regular basis. However all residents are responsible for cleaning their own bedrooms and are collectively responsible for the cleanliness of communal areas. It is not reasonable for any resident not to participate in keeping their accommodation clean.

There are self-service launderettes available in all residential areas, open 7 days a week as follows. Please note that all residents use the launderettes at their own risk and the University accepts no liability for any damage that may result from the use of these facilities.
