How our accommodation compares to other universities

Accommodation Costs Survey 2012/13

At the end of 2012 the National Union of Students/Unipol published their ‘Accommodation Costs Survey for 2012/13’. This survey covered 363,366 bed spaces, or 81% of the entire student accommodation market.

Amongst its findings, the survey highlighted the following:

Some institutions no longer have any low-cost rooms for their poorer students.
The average cost of a basic room with an average contract length is now £3,980 a year and very few first year students can expect to pay less than this.

  • At the University of Kent there are 797 rooms available in 5 bed self-catered houses which cost £3,956 for 2013/14 and 399 part-catered rooms in College halls which cost £3,715 for 2013/14.

The average contract lengths of institutions is 41 weeks.

  • Undergraduate students at Kent have the choice of 39 or 31 week contracts.

Referring to costs covered in residence fees, the survey showed that 96% of institutions include all utilities; 82% include internet access; 50% include wi-fi internet access and 80% include insurance.

  • Kent's accommodation costs include all of the above.
