Dr Clare Dunning

I was a mathematics undergraduate at the University of Bath, spending the placement year at CERN in Geneva, and a PhD student in the Centre for Particle Theory at Durham University. I went to York University as a temporary lecturer then held an EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship there before going to the University of Queensland as a research associate. I moved to the University of Kent in 2005 to take up a lectureship. I am currently a Reader in Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Director of Graduate Studies and PG Student Experience for the Division of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. .

Research Interests

My research interests lie in mathematical physics, essentially all things integrable including integrable quantum field theory, classical integrable systems, quantum spin chains and lattice models, the Rabi model, PT-symmetric quantum mechanics and Wronskian polynomials arising in certain solutions of Painlevé equations.

Publications

A fairly complete list of publications may be found here, in the arXiv, or in the Kent Academic Repository KAR.

Research Projects

See my CV for grants from EPSRC, the Royal Society, the London Mathematical Society, the Institute of Physics and the University of Queensland.

PhD/MPhil/MSc supervision

Please get in touch if you have a strong mathematical, mathematical physics or physics background and are interested in research in or near any of my research interests.

Teaching

Current teaching: MAST6004/MAST7004 Quantum Mechanics.

Past teaching: Applications of Mathematics, Diagram Algebras in Mathematics and Physics, Linear Partial Differential Equations, Mathematics for Biomedical Imaging, Several Variable Calculus, M athematical Techniques and Differential Equations, Mathematical Modelling, Quantum Mechanics, Waves and Vibrations, Calculus and Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Writing and Key Skills, Mathematical Methods 1.

MSOR grant

The workbooks prepared long ago now as part of an MSOR grant on Reading, Understanding and Writing proof with Lara Alcock and Gavin Brown may be found here.

Outreach

I am a Stem Ambassador and have been involved in a variety of outreach activities with young people. Recently this has included outreach events at schools in Kent and London, Royal Insitution Masterclasses, general science activities for Kent & Medway STEMNET and participating in the East Kent Big Bang near me fair. I am also a volunteer with Inspiring the Future - Inspiring Women.
