Long Term Care of Europe’s
Older Citizens: Policy and Fact

Providing data to support the relationship between care practice and quality of care in long term care facilities in Europe
Final conference of the SHELTER project

Monday December 5th 2011
Room Maelbeck, Residence Palace, International Press Centre, rue de la Loi, 104 Brussels

Coffee and refreshments from 13.00 will be followed by discussion and presentations from 14.00 until 16.30 hours

With people aged 80 plus set to comprise 11.5% of the EU population by 2050, the drive to deliver effective and affordable long term care is an urgent challenge. A 2011 OECD report** financed by the European Commission, predicts that the cost of care in OECD countries could triple in 2050 from the current average of 1.5% of GDP to 4.5%. The demand for long term care is set to double.

A comprehensive vision that combines clinical efficacy with cost effectiveness will be vital if Europe is to achieve a sustainable society in 2050.

The SHELTER final conference will showcase how person level data can address cross-cultural differences in the quality of care and the organization of LTCF care practice.  It will use data from an EU funded project on older people in nursing homes. The project was undertaken in eight countries: Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK.
