National report showcases University of Kent research

A Centre for Health Services Studies project has been chosen as one of the most important pieces of work currently taking place in universities, according to the Big Ideas for the Future report. Emeritus Professor of Human Aging Iain Carpenter is the UK lead researcher in an EU-funded project to analyse over 4,000 residents of nursing homes in eight European countries.

A Learning and Development Strategy for Children’s Hospices across London

A new report from Jenny BIllings and Linda Jenkins of the Centre for Health Services Studies. This project lays the foundation for the development of a sustainable and unified approach to learning and development by bringing together policy, practice and evidence, and interfacing with regulatory requirements that have recently been strengthened for hospices and that are inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Research collaboration aims to help stroke sufferers

A new Medical Research Council (MRC)-funded project, involving the University of Kent (including Professor Simon Coulton from the Centre for Health Services Studies) and clinicians from Kent & Canterbury Hospital, William Harvey Hospital and Margate Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, will test the efficacy of a new treatment for stroke sufferers diagnosed with a visual-spatial impairment known as hemi-spatial neglect.

Design of a methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated commissioning arrangements and their outcomes

Kent County Council are currently developing a strategy for commissioning integrated health and social care for older people with the health services. This project will support the development of this strategy by assisting with the development of definitions and key principles around central concepts of integration and by using a consultation and validation approach as the strategy progresses.

Phase 2: Nursing home, primary care and secondary care settings

A new report from Laura Holdsworth and Annette King from the Centre for Health Services Studies looks at the Department of Health's End of Life Care Strategy. The aim of this study was to use exploratory methods to develop a toolkit consisting of a questionnaire and training guide for three healthcare settings which would be acceptable to patients, carers or family members and healthcare professionals for recording preferences for place of care and death with end of life patients.
