The University of Kent was granted its Royal Charter in January 1965, and in October of that year the first 500 students walked on to the Canterbury campus. In 2005 the University took the opportunity to celebrate its many achievements of the last 40 years and to look forward to the future.
A series of special events were organised in celebration and included:
- a special commemorative service held at Canterbury Cathedral
- an alumni reunion weekend
- sports fun day
- an Arts Fest
- 'town and gown' processions at congregations in Canterbury and Rochester
- time capsule burial
